What is 7-OH and What Does it do?

7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) is a primary active metabolite of mitragynine, the main alkaloid found in kratom (Mitragyna speciosa). 7-OH is formed in the liver after the body metabolizes mitragynine. It is considered to be more potent than mitragynine itself, binding more strongly to the mu-opioid receptors in the brain. This increased binding affinity is believed to contribute to 7-OH’s potential effects, which may include:

  • Pain relief: 7-OH may interact with opioid receptors to provide pain relief, similar to how prescription opioids work.
  • Mood elevation: Some users report experiencing mood-lifting effects from 7-OH, such as reduced anxiety and improved overall mood.
  • Sedation: At higher doses, 7-OH may induce sedation and relaxation.
  • Cessation of other substances that hit opioid receptors in the brain.
